Three steps

How it works

  1. Drop in the MP4

Drag in or choose the video. MOV, WebM and MKV work the same way. It stays on your computer; nothing is sent anywhere.

  2. Pick the bitrate, and the part

192 kbps is the sensible default, 320 the ceiling, 128 is plenty for speech. Drag the range handles if you only want a stretch of it.

  3. Download the MP3

Play it back to check, then download. The file is named after the video, ready for a phone, a player or an editor.

Why people choose it

A real MP3 encoder, in the browser

Browsers cannot write MP3 on their own, so this page ships the LAME encoder compiled to WebAssembly. It loads once, the moment you ask for an MP3, and encodes at the bitrate you picked.

Stereo stays stereo

The channels of the video are kept: a stereo mix comes out stereo, a mono recording stays mono. MP3 takes 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz, so a studio file at 96 kHz is brought down to 48.

Just the part you want

A range bar with two handles and two time fields: keep the whole track, or cut one song, one answer, one chorus.

Already MP3 inside? Copied, not re-encoded

Some videos carry MP3 audio already. Those are copied out untouched, in seconds, so nothing is lost to a second encode.

WAV and M4A too

The same page writes WAV, when you want the uncompressed master, and M4A, when AAC in a small file is what a phone wants.

Nothing leaves your computer

No upload, no server, no account. The video is read and the MP3 is written on your own device, so it is safe for private recordings.

How to convert MP4 to MP3 for free

Drop the video on the panel above, leave the format on MP3, pick a bitrate and press Extract. The soundtrack is decoded from the MP4 with the browser’s own WebCodecs and encoded to MP3 with LAME running as WebAssembly. A three-minute song takes a few seconds on a laptop; the progress bar shows where it is.

It is not only MP4. MOV from an iPhone, WebM from a screen recorder, MKV from a capture card: the audio track is read the same way, so the same page converts video to MP3 whatever the container.

Which bitrate to choose

192 kbps is the default because it is transparent for most music on most speakers and comes to about 1.4 MB per minute of audio. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 allows and the pick when the source is a clean studio mix. 128 kbps is plenty for a lecture or a podcast and half the size.

Bitrate cannot add quality that the video did not have: an MP4 whose audio was recorded at 96 kbps does not get better at 320. When the video already carries MP3, the page skips the encoder and copies the stream out as it is.

Private and free, by design

An MP4 to MP3 converter that uploads your file has a copy of it. This one never does: the decode and the encode both run in your browser, there is no account and no watermark, and a two-hour recording costs you nothing.

How it compares

A free, private alternative to MP4 to MP3 sites

The typical converter uploads the whole video to a server, makes you wait in a queue and puts the higher bitrates behind a paywall. This one encodes on your own machine.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to MP3 for free?

Drop the MP4 onto the tool, keep MP3 selected, pick 128, 192 or 320 kbps and click Extract MP3. The MP3 is encoded in your browser and is ready to download when it is done. No sign-up, nothing uploaded.

Does it work with MOV, WebM or MKV?

Yes. Any video your browser can read works the same way: MOV, WebM, MKV, M4V. The audio track is read straight out of the container.

Is the MP3 stereo?

Yes. The channels of the video are kept: stereo stays stereo, mono stays mono. A surround track with more than two channels is folded down to stereo, because MP3 has no more than two.

Which bitrate should I use?

192 kbps for most music, 320 kbps when the source is a clean mix and size does not matter, 128 kbps for speech. The default is 192.

Can I convert only part of the video?

Yes. After the file loads, drag the start and end handles on the range bar, or type the times, and only that stretch is encoded.

Is the file uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is read and the MP3 is written entirely on your device. Nothing is sent to a server and no account is needed.

Is there a size or length limit?

The MP3 is held in memory until you download it, so a single extraction is capped at four hours. Longer recordings can be done in pieces with the range handles.

Can I get a WAV instead?

Yes. The format row has WAV (uncompressed 16-bit PCM) and M4A (AAC) beside MP3. Pick one and press Extract.
